Neophyte for
Steinway Spirio

performed by Camila De Oliveira

The Steinway Spirio is a player piano — meaning that it can play itself based on a recording.

Neophyte is a piece I wrote for four hands (with two of the hands being a pre-recorded and edited part). This allows the piano to play parts that are impossible for a pianist to play. The technology in the Steinway Spirio makes this all possible.

About the piece:

This piece was commissioned by Lewis Eady Pianos for a special event with three original works for the Spirio system.

Programme Note: Many musical journeys begin with a newcomer and an experienced teacher. Our teachers show us the path, but often the students choose a different direction in order for the music to explore new places... sometimes to our teacher's dismay...

Here, you can see the player piano features of the Steinway Spirio being sequenced through a DAW to allow advanced passages to be played, beyond what is humanly possible.
